Top Interior decor Tips: Give a Contemporary Look to your Traditional Living Room

Simple changes can bring about massive modification to your living room, which can make the place entertaining and relaxing.

Did you know that by implementing strategic decor ideas and changes, you can transform the look of your living space from traditional to contemporary?

When you want to give your living room a fresh look, start with the most basic things like a ceiling fan, fireplace and the wall trims. Bold designs along with modern seating used in this room have created a new aesthetic appearance to a seemingly common room.

In this image, one can see that the room had basic gold walls with white trim. A medium coloured floor with oak finish and a traditional fan on the ceiling. The fireplace is incongruent with the size of the room and looks really small for a large and vacant room.

After the design adjustments

The oak floor in this room was given a facelift by finishing it in rich antique brown shade with subtle scrapings that added character to the room. The walls have been coloured in neutral beige along with espresso coloured trim to create a stark contrast. The traditional ceiling fan was replaced with a modern looking one to give it a contemporary look.

The blank wall in the room was adorned with a custom made wine rack designed by Traci Connell. The rack was a necessary addition to add an aesthetic storage space that complements the décor of the house. The unit is being used to store the wine collection, which is art in itself. The drawers are for the napkins and linen and cabinets are being used for storing the wine glasses. The counter top is made of dark quartz, which has been complemented with gray tiles in the background. Perfect living room interior design ideas!

The console table in this image is from South Africa and sports a glass top for added lustre. It acts as a divider in the room, which has been used to display the accessories.

With the addition of maple wood surround, the fireplace has become a focal point and the espresso trim creates the illusion of size and makes the hearth look bigger than its actual size. The contemporary edge has been augmented with the vertical mosaic tiles in the fireplace surround. This simple addition adds character and dimension to the fireplace.

The audio speakers are the same colour as the wall with twin art on each side to match the hearth. The silver frames complement the fireplace surround and the espresso trims due to the mix of colours. The TV on the wall placed slightly above the artwork completes the design.

The modern sectional sofa completes the contemporary finish to the room. The sides have been completed with baseball stitch and the dark steel gray colour leather adds masculine touch to the room.

The heavy square table with steel trimmings has four drawers for storage. The height of the table has been complemented with low seating sofa to reinforce the modern look.

The hand knotted area rug in gray taupe background with black stripes is perfect addition to the room’s décor. The horizontal stripes on the drapes match the stripes on the rug by adding a contrast.

The extra seating in the room has been provided by the comfortable chairs covered in textured fabric. The silver coloured frames of the twin art have been matched with a twisted metal C, which provides industrial feel and completes the masculine look.

Lack of space in the room gave another interesting piece a shot to be added to the room. This C table with gray metal finish has been added at the front of the sofa, which gives an extra space to place a cup or a glass.

The empty corner in the room has been filled up with a contemporary vase with organic plants to add greenery and style.

This floor plan provides a bird’s eye view of the seating arrangement, which is corresponding to the dining area.

The simple shifts in interior design brought about great changes to this boring room and now add an edgy feel with a hint of personalization. Just by working up the pieces together, the whole room has been given a fresh look with a contemporary theme.
