Understanding HVAC

Even if the summertime seems a long way away right now, the months will pass us by faster than you know it. When that season comes along, I think I can speak for most of us when I say that we want air conditioning in our house. It is a modern comfort that we are loathe to live without in the States, and there is a good reason for it.

Whether you are in Ohio, Florida, or anywhere else across the country, it usually gets pretty hot once we hit late May and early June. July and August are when it starts to really bake, and if it is humid out too…well, it is a combination that is not fun to experience.  Sleeping like that is a nightmare.

You can see it on sites like this, https://www.miamiherald.com/news/weather-news/article272031292.html, but it seems like the warmer weather is coming sooner than ever these days.  That just makes it even more important to make sure that we have functioning HVAC systems.

What is HVAC?

It is an acronym for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. I know that heating is probably the least of your worries down in sunny Florida, but when it comes to states like Ohio in the northern half of the country, it gets pretty cold too. That is why most of the systems in homes are equipped to do both, even if you live in a more temperate or tropical area.

Why it Matters?

Obviously, the main purpose of these units is to keep the air in our homes either hot or cold, depending on what we set the thermostat to. However, there is a little more going on as well, as you can tell from the “V” in HVAC. As your AC or heater is blowing out the right temperature of air, it is also making sure that It is as clean as it can be.

That ventilation part is critical, as Temperge emphasizes in their materials and explanations of how this all works.  Sure, if you are not someone who has asthma or another underlying health condition, it may not seem like that big of a deal.  However, you might be surprised by how much dust ends up in the air that we breath without the proper ventilation systems in place.

How Does Installation Work?

This is where things get a little bit sticky – it will pretty much depend on what type of HVAC unit you want installed, as well as how old your current house is.  If you do not have central heat and air right now, it will probably be a bit more expensive than if you are just getting it replaced.  However, trust me when I say that it is totally worth it.

I have rented a lot of apartments over the years and lived in a lot of different homes. The difference between having a portable or wall-installation unit and central heat and air is truly night and day. If you have ever felt the difference before, for sure you know what we are discussing here.

As you can see on this page, having a wall unit or other type of portable AC works in a pinch.  So, do not worry if you are having an emergency as far as a terrible heat wave goes – not to mention, it always helps to have a backup in those circumstances in case your central system malfunctions.  However, they are really annoying to deal with.

The water that drips from the ones installed in windows is a real pain to clean up, for one thing.  There is also the simple fact that that they get dirty a lot faster.  Trying to clean them from the inside is hard, and from the outside…depending on what floor it is on, it can get downright dangerous.

If you are tired of dealing with that sort of thing, this might be something to consider.  My advice, though, is not to wait until it is already the middle of July and the weather is so hot you hardly want to get off the couch.  Most contractors will be in high demand by then for repairs and installations, so try to initiate the process when that’s not going on.  Winter might be another high-demand period, so I tend to wait until spring or autumn, personally.
